Microsoft to Borrow Money for Yahoo

Tue, 05 Feb 2008 09:34:00 -0400

Microsoft has never borrowed any money before, the envisioned $44.6 billion ($44,600,000,000) buyout of Yahoo may stain the balance sheet.

All business owners know how tough it is to borrow money. It is especially hard for that first time borrower.

Bill...we need your last three years W2 statements.

Bill...you started this company with assets some would say were pilfered, please supply documentation.

Bill...we need to pull your FICO score, you can sign this release, by the way we are waiving the $25 report fee.

Bill...we understand you recently gave away $30 billion, we need a cash flow analysis.

Bill...we usually require a personnel guarantee from senior management, how much equity do you have in your home?

Yes - life is tough for first time borrowers.

What is the difference between Windows and Linux Hosting?

Fri, 25 May 2007 12:09:40 +0000
There are somethings that run on Windows and not Linux. Windows hosting will support ASP / ASP.net and MSSQL where as currently Linux will not. If you need the listed applications then select a Windows hosting package, if not choose Linux.

Web Hosting Mergers and Acquisitions - January 2008

Fri, 08 Feb 2008 09:54:00 -0400

January was a bit slow --- this is often the case as firms often try to close transactions by the end of the year.

Sunnyvale, CA -- Network Appliance, Inc. NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP) completed the acquisition of Boston based Onaro, a datacenter automation solution company in a $120 million transaction. It is reported that backers put about $9.5 million in Onaro, which looks like a great return.

Las Vegas NV-- Dialpoint Communications Corporation (OTCBB: DLPC), acquired the assets of South Carolina based Hostigation.com. Dialpoint issued 333,334 shares --- a deal which in another blog I noted was worth $50k in an all stock transaction.

Niagara Falls, ON - Canadian based Vision Online Network was acquired by Deli India based Real Value Hosting. Vision Online Network specializes in Windows based web hosting.

Duluth, GA - Ralph Smith's Fat Jack Hosting Acquired HostMyProxies.com, a proxy website host. HostMyProxies.com is based at an undisclosed location.

Dallas, TX – Affiliated Computer Services, Inc has acquired Syan for approximately $60 million. Syan’s trailing twelve-months revenue was approximately $75 million. The transaction was funded by existing cash on hand. Syan has several large data centers in the UK.

Tempe, AZ - Greenstreet Real Estate Partners acquired the Tempe One (Tempe, AZ) data and call center for $30.3 million.

Edmonton, AB, Canada – California upstart Enacten acquired all of the shares of Edmonton based Alentus Corporation in an all cash transaction. Alentus provides dedicated/managed and shared hosting services. New Commerce Communications (this blogger) represented Alentus in the transaction.

Pittsford, NY - Spider Graphics Corporation and ITX, a web technology and hosting firm merged. The new name is Spider ITX, very creative.

Overland Park, KS - Erickson Solutions Group has bought the client base of Nothing But Net a company that concentrates on Web and e-mail hosting. Hopefully the acquisition will help the Erickson corporate website.

Raleigh, NC - Hosted Solutions has acquired a new data facility, it's second in Charlotte, NC. The site adds 7,600 square feet of floor space.

Obviously not all inclusive - but from the NCC files.

Overview

The site that you are looking at now has been hosted by LunarPages since the
first day for more than 5 years! Currently, I also have another two websites
hosted by LunarPages currently. I used to have eight accounts with them! Thanks
to the multiple domain hosting feature, I can now host more websites using less
accounts.

The discussion below is based on my experience with LunarPages as one of their
longest customer. You cannot get more insider information about LunarPages
elsewhere :-)

LunarPages is currently serving over 150,000 customers in over 200 countries. It
was founded in the summer of 2000 when a successful large scale hosting
provider, Add2Net Corporation, expanded its hosting offerings to include shared
hosting.

They are offering two Unix shared hosting plans - Basic Hosting ($7.95) and
Business Hosting ($22.95). The $22.95 plan is a larger plan with unlimited disk
space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth. They also offer other types of hosting
including Windows hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated and semi-dedicated servers but
in this review, I'm just going to write about the $7.95 Basic Hosting Plan,
which I believe is sufficient for 99% of you.

Plan Size and Features

1,500 GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are a lot. Click on the small
picture to view the original wallpaper of Saguaro National Park, Arizona. The
size of the large and high quality picture is 228 KB (kilobyte). With 1,500 GB
of disk space, you can store more than 6.5 million copies of this picture! And
with 15,000 GB/month bandwidth, this picture can be viewed more than 65,700,000
times a month (That's 65.7 million)! The most suitable words to describe 1,500
GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are "More Than Enough!". :-)

There are many web hosts that offer large disk space and bandwidth, but keep in
mind that these web hosts might have funny restrictions such as file size limit,
daily bandwidth limit, or even binary files bandwidth limit (pictures, MP3s,
Flash ...). LunarPages does not have such restrictions with your disk space and
bandwidth usage. You can upload a single 1,500 GB file if you want and you can
finish your 15,000 GB bandwidth in 1 day. As LunarPages founder and CEO, Ron
Riddle told me, "We actually allow people to use everything and we have no
problem offering them what we are currently offering."

Customer Support

It is not the large disk space or bandwidth that make me rank LunarPages as #1
high but its superior customer support! They spend a great deal of money hiring
a lot of support staff to take care of their customers. All of them are very
friendly and knowledgeable. With their effort on customer support, you can
expect the best attention from them.

1. Email support - Simply email support@Lunarpages.com and you will always get a
good reply, no matter if you are a current customer or you just need to ask some
presale questions. Good replies are replies with the exact answer you need. I
suggest that you send them an email right now to see how effective they are. All
email will automatically be tracked by the same ticket system used by the
support help desk. This is my favorite method to request support, because it is
fast, convenient and effective. Email support is available twenty-four hours a
day, seven days a week.

2. Support Help Desk - You will send your inquiry through the use of an online
form. All your inquires will be tracked and recorded using their ticket system.
They even keep a history of all your issues so you can refer back to them
anytime you want. There is also a knowledgebase of frequently asked questions in
the help desk so you can find your answers without creating a support ticket.

They used to be using a third party support help desk system known as DeskPro.
But because they are so rich customer oriented, they decided to dump DeskPro and
develope their own help desk system and call it LunarDesk!

3. Toll-Free Support - Just call 1-877-LunarPAGES if you need phone support for
USA and Canada. For the United Kingdom, call 0800-072-9150 instead. If you live
outside of these countries, you cannot dial the toll free number. They provide
another support line for their international customers: 1-714-521-8150. I have
called them several times and they have no problem talking to me with my slang.

4. Lunar Forums (LunarForums.com)- LunarPages provides forums to let their
customers communicate and help each other. You can find many answers for your
questions. You will also meet many happy customers there. Remember only hosts
that are confident with their services and have many customers dare to set up an
open forum. Currently, the forum has around 35,670 registered users. And
LunarForums is also one of the oldest webmaster forums out there.

I will surely rate their customer support as 10 over 10, or 11 over 10 if I can
:-) Their customer satisfaction speaks for itself. I always stress to my
visitors who write to me that if they are web hosting newbie who need a lot of
attentions and supports, they should always pick LunarPages. This will make sure
that they are fully taken care of in their "early age".

If you have read my reviews or other web hosts, you will notice that I will
state that if you have any unresolved issues with the host, you can always
forward them to me and I will take them directly to the officers. Even though I
have direct contact with many important officers of LunarPages (even the CEO), I
never mention it in my LunarPages review. I don't need to do so because all
LunarPages clients are able to resolve the issue directly with the dedicated
support staffs without going through a third party like me.

Sometime ago, I have submitted a possible SPAM issue to them. To my surprise,
not only that they reply to my email but they have also called me and left me a
voice message! You can click on the 'Play' button below to listen to the voice
message yourself. They did look into SPAM issues seriously to make sure the mail
server is not blocked. They are constantly making sure that all their customers
emails will be sent and received properly.

On the Wal-Mart-ized Web...

Fri, 16 Mar 2007 17:39:00 -0400

Liam says this week's most important trend is web hosting providers' continued expansion of data center footprints. The strong demand for hosting facilities seems like a good sign. At the same time, there are a number of outside-world developments that folks in the hosting business ought to keep an eye on.

1. On Wednesday, in addition to officially releasing RHEL5, Red Hat announced that it will soon launch an open source marketplace called Red Hat Exchange (RHX). As Business Week reports, Red Hat will guarantee the compatibility of RHX products with its platform AND provide tech support for each and every 3rd party product on the exchange. In addition, RHX will allow end users to submit ratings, read reviews and compare notes.

2. Later that afternoon, Microsoft said it will buy Tellme Networks. The Associated Press thinks the deal is worth $800 million to $1 billion.

3. Less than a day later, Cisco announced that it has agreed to acquire WebEx for $3.2 billion (or $2.9 billion, if you deduct WebEx's $300 million cash balance).

4. And last but not least Google sort of confirmed that it's working on a mobile phone.

It's a Wal-Mart-ized web; every Big Co wants to assemble a broader range of more seamlessly integrated products for a wider and better networked audience. This leaves less and less of a market for old school vendors who sell standalone widgets to isolated prospects.

For instance, consider 1&1's recent survey of 765 small business owners. Andreas says 100% of the respondents agree that the absence of a company website is bad for sales, but there's much more to these customers' operations beyond setting up a web presence. Might they not benefit from Zoho or ThinkFree powered productivity apps? SharePoint based collaboration? CRM?

More importantly, Andreas counts "hundreds of thousands of US small businesses" among his customers. As such, one super valuable feature that he's uniquely positioned to deliver is a 1&1 social network through which customers can connect with potential vendors, partners and buyers. I feel like 1&1 is really missing out by amassing a sizable community without leveraging it for its members' benefit.

As SWSoft CEO Serguei Beloussov likes to point out, 1&1 and its competitors have sold tens of millions of "web hosting 1.0" accounts, which collectively generate billions in annual revenue. He's absolutely right - but as you see above, the world's not standing still...

When you ruminate on all of the arguments for Linux web hosting over Windows hosting (there are more as I don’t even mention the whole Apache stuff), the decision would seem to me to be a no brainer: Linux web hosting wins hands down as the operating system that you should choose if you want to have a stable, reliable and full featured site that takes advantage of the latest in web technologies.

Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties

Mon, 14 Apr 2008 07:08:33 GMT
While it may still be debatable whether all the major search engines currently employ a duplicate content penalty, all have made it abundantly clear that they do not have any desire to provide search results that rehash the same content over and over. Actively avoid any potential penalties by taking a proactive approach to building unique content.

I used to suggest MovableType to people but over the past few years it just hasn’t been able to keep up with WordPress. Plus it is a ‘bit resource hungry and their license agreements are way too confusing for normal users.

My advice for most dedicated servers would be this: go for the one that has the most RAM. Then only try to compare processors. RAM is much more important than you'd think for servers, especially if you have database driven apps.
